Is it time to quit your job?

Posted

Has the thought to quit your job crossed your mind a few times since you started your position a few years ago? Has it crossed your mind a few times in the last few weeks? When is enough, enough?

Is it time to quit your job and move on to bigger and better things? Sometimes the answer is a no brainer, but if you’re still struggling to find an answer, here are a few telltale signs that it’s time to say goodbye.

1. You’ve Reached a Learning Plateau

If you have a sinking feeling that you’ve hit a plataeu in terms of learning and you feel you’ve made every advance possible to let your higher-ups know that you’d like more responsibility, then this could be a serious reason to move on – for your career and your sanity’s sake! Of course, if you haven’t talked to your manager about learning a new skill or taking an on-line course, that would be a better place to start. After all, communication is key.

2. You’re Not Receiving Any Feedback

This one goes hand-in-hand with hitting a learning plataeu. If the work you are doing is not being discussed and constructively criticized, it can seem like the work is all for nothing. In order to better ourselves we need to know that we’ve done a good job or that we can improve (There’s always room!). The best managers will be invested in making sure that you are receiving constructive criticism. If you’re manager is not, it may be time to seek out a company or team that is more invested in your development.

3. You’re Feeling Undervalued

If you’ve steadily taken on a huge mound of extra work that wasn’t part of your original job description without a change in compensation or acknowledgment in other ways, it may be a sign that you’ve moved past your original skill set and you’re ready to move to the next level. However, your current employer might not have an area for you to move up. In which case, it may be time for you to quit your job and move on.

4. Your Dreams are Dying

You went to college inspired to change the world. You got out and you were excited to make that dream a reality by going into your desired workforce. You worked, you worked and you worked… but you somehow lost your guiding light. If the position you’re in has caused you to forget your dreams, there are plenty of great workplaces out there where you can meet people who share your dream. Go out and get it. It’s never to late.

5. You’re Ready

Maybe there’s nothing wrong with your compensation. Maybe your manager is over the moon about the work you do. Maybe you love your coworkers and everything at the office is absolutely delightful (meaning there is endless free coffee and coconut water). And maybe you still just KNOW that something is missing. Guess what? That is totally fine. The things you want and need are bound to change over time. You don’t have to quit your job because something went wrong. You can quit because you’re ready.
